New York JFK International Airport Information

John F Kennedy International Airport, or New York JFK Airport lies about 15 miles southeast of Manhattan and is operated by Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. In terms of passenger numbers it is one of the busiest airports in the world, with more than 40 million travellers passing through the airport annually.

With 9 airport terminal buildings, navigating JFK Airport can be a bit daunting at first glance, but the layout is actually reasonably straightforward, with handy signs pointing you in the right direction throughout the complex. Most large airlines have their own terminal buildings at the airport, including British Airways in Terminal 7, and American Airlines in Terminal 8. Smaller airlines such as Virgin Atlantic share facilities in the public terminal buildings.

New York JFK originally opened in the late 1940s when it was called Idlewild Airport, after the golf course that surrounded it, and since then it has been repeatedly expanded and enlarged. It was renamed after the late president in December 1963 around a month after his assassination.

Getting from JFK Airport into the centre of New York is simple. A cab will cost a fixed rate of $45 and take you straight to most hotels in New York, although this can be quite frustrating at rush hour when the traffic going to the city is extremely heavy. The AirTrain service connects JFK with the city centre, and offers regular services throughout the day at a cost of $12 each way.
